rotting yew roots

hi there

I keep planting specimen yew cones only to have them wither and die in a few months. the roots are invariably rotten. yet they were good at planting time. the soil is heavy subsoil clay.

any thoughts?

Bueno Fran,
I think the clay is your problem. Did you try ammending the soil? I have clay too, and it such a problem. Buena suerte.

yes, the clay must be the problem.
I have now lifted on of them and replanted on top of a thick layer of volcanic gravel.
