| I have two blue junipers(wichita,I believe)in two concrete planters. I've been playing at doing topiaries on yaupon hollies for about 3 years now and just about comfortable enough now to try a spiral on these junipers. Is this variety suitable for topiary?

| Juniperus scopulorum 'Wichita Blue'? I did a little web search but found no reference of it being used as topiary. I, however, recall seeing 'Topiary Juniper' at various home improvement stores and nurseries labeled with that name. I am not certain if this juniper variety could be trained this way or not. My thinking is *try it*. You could start by doing the initial pruning just to see how the braches are laid out and how it will respond to the first pruning then go with your felling. I think it's worth a try. Let us know how it turns out for you. There are so many rare gems out there that sometimes slip by undetected. Good Luck! Ankrara's Hobby Corner

| It is a very upright pyramidal, so it would lend itself well to a spiral topiary. When pruning this cultivar, as in any Juniperus, make certain that you always leave sufficient viable foliage on any branch you wish to retain. If you prune to bare wood you will lose the branch, so prune in stages to insure back-budding close to the stem. |

| If you have a Witchita, it is one of the best upright blue junipers to spiral. Blue arrow is another one I use, it is narrower, but not as blue. I have cut 100's. Let us know if you have braved the cut yet. Love to see a photo. |

If that is not in fact what they are, what are they? |
