Topiary Shaping

I have a spiral trimmed Dwarf Alberta Spruce which hasn't been trimmed in a year. I need to trim the grooves of the spiral. Do I trim them all the way down to the trunk? Will this prevent those branches form regrowing?
Thanks,
Robert

I'm way late in responding. If you wish to expose a bit of the trunk, by all means trim the grooves all the way down to trunk. Not all spirals require trimming down all the way to the trunk.

I'm not an expert of spruce and so I'm not sure if it cut branches would regrow.
