I would like to make a topiary, have ivy atc.need advice

I have Ivy growing that is getting a little too long. I also has some older forsynthia bushes that I cant decide what to do with.
I read that I can make a topiary out of the forsynthia, bust since they already have multiple branches, do I just go in a trim out all stems to a main branch? I was thinking putting it into a small tree form.

Also How can I make a ball topiary with the ivy so that it is on a tall stem with a ball on top with ivy?

I was searching online for a way to make hanging ivy balls and came across this thread. Can someone help Tammy and me figure out how to use "wild" ivy for a topiary or hanging ball of ivy? There is a LOT of wild-growing ivy where I live in the NW corner of WA, but how do I know what parts to dig up and use?
