Favorite cities for spring flowers in Europe?

Need help in discovering the best places to see spring flowers in Europe this year. If you could think of your all around favorite cities, which ones would they be, for best opportunities to see them in the wild, in the cities, or in gardens. And what flowers is each place really known for?

Thanks for your help.

RE: Favorite cities for spring flowers in Europe?

Fransx - I've been to England and Ireland in the spring during the first 2 weeks of May on two separate trips. Both of course have beautiful gardens! May is a great time to visit - no crowds, kids are still in school, flights and accommodations are cheaper, gardens are in bloom (they are at least 3 weeks to month ahead of Massachusetts).

Since we went to Ireland more recently (1997) I'll give you some details on places we visited. For cities, if you are in Dublin you can go to St. Stephen's Green, a public garden. Or just outside of Dublin, there is Powerscourt Gardens (see http://www.powerscourt.ie/gardens/). The Irish country side is loaded with gardens. Most of the castles you can tour have gardens on the grounds. Just walking in the small towns you can pass beautiful containers and private gardens that you can see looking from the streets. In Killarney, I'd highly recommend Muckross House Gardens. (See http://www.muckross-house.ie/house.htm)

I was at the NE Flower show this year and picked up a brochure on Ireland published by the tourist board. They had a web site that you can search for houses and gardens to visit depending on where you'll be in Ireland. See the link below (use the search facility on that web site - beware it is a little 'clunky').

Hope this helps. If you have any questions about traveling to Ireland, I can try to give you more details. The Irish people were some of the most friendly people we've ever met. We enjoyed staying the wonderful B&B's and meeting people and enjoying the countryside. We are independent travelers who like to go to a new place each year and our trip to Ireland ranks up there with one of our best trips ever.

Here is a great link that may be of use if you are interested in gardens in Great Britain and Ireland. By clicking on the arrow next to the garden name you can go to the garden's web site or a one page summary of the garden.

There is the famous Chelsea Flower Show in London at the end of May: http://www.rhs.org.uk/chelsea/2005/index.asp

Hidcote Manor in the Cotswolds (Gloucestershire) is AMAZING anytime of year. The website is kind of lame though:

I am pretty sure all the rhododendrons (at the same time as the bluebells!) should be flowering at Heligan Gardens in May:

and if you went down to wonderful Cornwall, the famous Eden Project is nearby:
