Landscape design with native plants, worldwide

I'm a rising senior at Haverford College in PA, and I'm hoping to apply for a grant (The Wtason Fellowship) after I graduate to study native plant use in landscape design around the world. Does anyone have some suggestions for places I should go, people I should contact, or books or websites I should look at? Thanks!

Some information about a couple of trees native to Southamerica, which are used in landscaping, both have my homeland in common...
