Traveling over holiday times

Is it a really dumb idea to travel during, for instance, around Thanksgiving? It's one of the times my son would be off school. I assume we could busy ourselves on Tuesday/Wednesday and travel back on Friday/Saturday, but that Thursday, will everything be closed, in say, a big city like DC?
