Manley Hot Springs Greenhouse, Alaska

One of the more interesting private gardens I have visited in Alaska is the Manley Hot Springs Greenhouse in the village of Manley Hot Springs. This settlement is located at the s.w. end of the Elliot Highway. The greenhouse is privately owned by the Dart family. The greenhouse is heated by three concrete tubs filled with hot mineral water. The heat of the water allows for the growth of grapes, asian pears, tomatoes, peppers and a variety of decorative flowers which otherwise would not survive the cold winters of -40F. This greenhouse may be visited and the tubs used for an hour at the descretion of the Mr. and Mrs. Dart. They charge $5 admission. The tubs are approximately 102-104F in the summer, and are considerably warmer in the winter. There is overnight accomidations nearby at the local roadhouse.
