| Why a Fall Garden Tour?
Saturday, Nov. 6 will be the annual Fall Garden Tour for the San Diego Horticultural Society. Please see the calendar section for details.
When thinking of garden tours, many of us envision springtime blossoms and balmy afternoons. However, there are lots of great reasons to tour gardens in the Fall, and here’s five of them:
1. In our mild Southern California climate it’s important to plan for the year ‘round look of a plant, not just its spring or summer peak period. Seeing plants in a real garden setting (as opposed to in a pot at a nursery) will greatly help you picture their performance in your own garden at this time of the year.
2. Some plants really come into their own in the Fall, and you won’t notice these beauties on standard spring tours. Check out autumn foliage colors, bright berries, and fall-blooming perennials.
3. When better to learn about how plants that are new to you behave than after a gardener has lived with them for a while? Ask your garden host or hostess about the plants you’re particularly interested in.
4. Fall is the best time of year to add many kinds of plants to a garden, so it follows that getting inspired in the Fall will give you an even greater incentive to go plant shopping now! Luckily, you can fulfill this craving for plants if you attend our Annual Plant Sale immediately after the garden tour!
5. Fall is the perfect time to see the structure of a garden. The hardscape is less likely to be smothered in foliage and the generally more muted colors mean that paths and fences are easier to see and appreciate.
