Growing Angel Trumpet in High Desert

Posted by pcan 6 UT (My Page) on

Hello all, with the cold winter I find myself thinking of what I am going to plant in the spring. One plant that I would love to have in my garden is Angel Trumpet. But I would like to plant it in the ground. Our climate varies from 6a - 7 depending on the year. This year it would be a 7 but generally they call us a 6b. We are in the high desert, but we have irrigation ditches in the yard that flood about twice a week, generally keeping our back yard very moist throughout the summer and never a need to run sprinklers.

From what I have a read a shady location would be best, but can they survive the winter if winterized properly? Heavy mulch? Maybe wrap it like I do my Banana trees? If so would I cut back to the ground each fall? or would this be a annual here?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and happy planning!

Hi.... I live up near Logan, here in Utah. I haven't tried Angel's trumpet outside, but last year I grew several Devil's Trumpet plants, a very close relative to Angel's Trumpet. They were the FASTEST growing plant in my yard. They love our warm days and cool nights. Devil's Trumpet may be perennials in tropical climates, but I grow them as annuals. The plants become huge in one season, and have TONS of flowers. Here's a couple of pics.

Hello. I see no reason why you can't grow it there I'm in Dallas an it gets very hot here. Plant them in shade an keep moist an cut them back in the fall an stick the cuttings in a bucket an put them in a greenhouse or garage with some light ______DONOT CHANGE THE WATER______,just add some if the roots get dry plus they sometimes bloom over the winter months in the bucket. I put hay over the ones I leave in the ground an cover with a plastic pot an they do great. Some years i don't cover and they come thru just fine. They have to y in order to bloom. I hope this helps some.

Daturas can reseed in a temperate zone like z6 (D. wrightii is an example) so you would have them every year.

Brugmansias will not survive that cold a winter (a well-protected zone 8 location with mulch, maybe). You can grow plants in the ground if they're dug up every fall and containerized (I've done that here). It's easiest just to grow them in big tubs and take cuttings when and if the plants get too big to drag indoors.
