Caesalpinia pulcherrima-Cutting back?

RickB

I have two "Pride of Barbados" that I kept over the winter in pots. Both are about 3 ft in height, and both have a single stem about 1/2" in diamater, with foliage (not looking so good at this time of year) near the top. One was grown from seed, the other purchased from a nursery late last year. Both flowered late last fall, but not a great deal.

I intend to plant these in the ground once all danger of frost has past. My question is, how hard can I prune these back in order to encourage bushier growth? I dont want to prune it back so far as to kill it. But with a mostly bare 3 ft stem, its pretty unsightly.
