It should be fine if you cut the base and portect it if you are in zone 6. Last year when I lived in Kentucky, I cut mine down to the ground and protected it and it came back after seeing 3 degree's multiple times. It even sat in water that froze into ice and came back and grew faster than the year before, the pups on mine also came back.

I had several fall over this past summer and fall, as a result of voles eating the base of the plant under ground. The last few years, moles have been really bad in my yard, apparently drawn to earthworms that love my lush composty garden soil. Then the voles follow them in and eat many of my plants from the roots up. They especially love lariope. This is the first year they've started on the bananas though. This means war against the little rats! You can easily tell if this is your problem by inspecting the base of the plant--you can't tell from above the ground, but lay the plant over and look underneath. A warning sign would be tunnels hollowing out the ground around the base.

Well, I do have a million earthworms. Seriously, sometimes it is freaky how many I find when I dig. But, this fell over about... mmm... six inches above the ground, I'd say. Maybe a little more. The stalk bent. I *think* the base is still solid. It felt pretty good to me. I hope the voles stay away!
