How close can I plant a Mexican Fan palm to my pool?

I have a new in-ground gunite pool being constructed and have three Mexican Fan palms coming on Saturday. I had planned to place them 5 - 8 feet in a group behind the pool. Today I spoke with a landscape designer from the local nursery who advised to not plant them closer than 12 feet to avoid damage to the pool buy the root system.

Can anyone with experience with these trees chime in on how close I can plant them to the pool?

Palm roots donot expand with age like hardwood trees 6 feet should be good.

You may want to post this in the Palms & Cycads Forum. There will be many more folks knowledgeable about palm roots there. See link below. I would also post it in the Florida Gardening Forum for the mere fact that so many Floridians have both palm trees and pools. You will probably get lots of responses on both of those forums.
