Hardy Mandevilla-like plant?

sunbum

I'm looking for a replacement planting for a Mandevilla that we had growing on a small trellis by our mailbox. We really like the Mandevilla but it just doesn't make it through the winter here. I tried digging the thing up two winters ago, but it didn't do well when I replanted it. Is there another similar plant that will make it through an Atlanta winter? It can die back of course, but I'd like it to return with the spring. Should I just go with an 'annual' planting of the Mandevilla? I've got some Clematis that I could plant there, but I'm not sure if that will engulf my mailbox over the years. Any ideas?

Thanks.
