Tropicalesque Gardens

moving out of tropics

Well, semitropics anyway. I'm leaving New Orleans and will be going to Gadsden, Alabama, right on the border between zones 7 and 8. Does anyone have any advice on which plants I can use there to have some semblance of a new Orleans garden? Does anyone have a book to recommend? Thanks in advance.

I would plant cold hardy palms like Sabal Minor, Sabal Lousiana, Sabal Birmingham, Trachycarpus Takil, Trachycarpus Fortunei and Needle Palms. Also, for cold hardy Bananas, get a Musa Basjoo or Japanese Snow Banana. It is a die back perrenial, but grows 10-15 feet in a season and really looks tropical.
