White ginger

Hello everyone!

How do I know which way is up on a white ginger rhizome? There are no roots and it seems like it has eyes on every side. How the heck do I plant this thing? I planted it in some peaty soil about a month ago, but no growth yet. (grrr...) Does it need bottom heat or strong light to start?

Thanks in advance!

Just let it go. The roots will grow down and the shoots will grow up -- that might mean they wrap around the rhizome a bit, but they'll go the right direction.

The hedychiums do need a certain soil temp before they come out of dormancy. I don't remember what it is, though. So long as the rhizome isn't rotting, it'll be fine.

In Oregon I think giving this bottom heat would certainly help. If you can heat it to 75/80F you ought to see some new growth alot faster.
