WOW! Your yard looks great. Would love to drive by sometime. What do you feed your banana's? What is the vine growing on the bamboo fence?

I have read that washingtonian fan palms can grow back after turning brown from winter... I have also read that they are marginal in our area. Try posting your question on Northwest Palms & Subtropical discussion board.

I wish I knew what that vine was. I bought it a couple years ago at Portland Nursery but forgot the name. It's the fastest growing plant I've ever seen.

I built a greenhouse over the palm today to see if I can kick start it.

rokal, the large red plant is a self seeded deep red amaranthus. Here's a closeup.

Washingtonias don't last in the PNW. Their min. temp. is too high. One up the hill from me, maybe 10 ft. tall or more was discolored last time I looked at it. It got into the upper teens this winter. At another nearby place some windmill palms and washingtonias were once planted in front of the house. They all lived from some years but as always, it got too cold for the washingtonias one year and that was it for them. (Some time later the windmill palms also disappeared, but probably due to a change in ownership or attitudes rather than cold damage).

There is another one that has grown at a local hospital for years but it is right next to a large vent that blows a tall plume of warm air.
