Tropical bed advice and post some pics

The wife and I are putting in some tropical beds at our house this year. In the smallest bed I have already laid down some composted chicken and steer manure along with some shredded leaves to help improve the soil tilt this past fall. That bed is your typical back fill subsoil that comes with modern houses these days. That bed in south facing along the house and because our summers are pretty dry you can guess that soil stays baked. The other bed will be a retaining wall/raised bed south facing along a fence line. Can yall give me some advice for starting tropical beds? Looking for some do's and don'ts. BTW if you can through in some pics of your tropical beds from last year (or if you are lucky this year) that would be nice.

If you can get some mulch on there and put the plants quite close together, it won't dry out as fast. Use lots of large, variegated, and unusual foliage.

My beds aren't tropical enough to use as an example but I'm surprised nobody else has shared any pics.
