How much is this worth? Bargain or Ripoff?

| Hello all, today I picked up two tropical plants for around the pond area.
A Chinese Fan Palm for 8 dollars
and a White Bird of Paradise for 9 dollars
What do you think about these pricings? Good deal, average, or ripoff? Should I get more or be lucky I just got them? Thanks so much! |

| It depends what size the plants are. For my standard 3 gal Orange bird, it was about $9-12, if I remember right, that's here in central Florida. |

| The plants were reasonably large, fan palm over 4 feet tall. |

| WOW, what a steal! You would pay close to forty dollars for a palm like that where I live. It is very hard to find tropicals like that for under 30-40 dollars normally. good find. |

| It also depends on where you live and the availability of them. If you live in Florida, it's probably an average price. If you live in Alaska, I'd say it's a very good deal. Also, if YOU think it's a good deal, then it IS! |

| Just about anywhere, these would be excellent prices, and if you shop around a bit, you will be reassured. I recently purchased some very large Majesty Palms (for filler in my garden). They are almost 6 feet tall, and I paid 12 bucks for each. Yesterday I saw smaller specimens at a nursery for over 30 bucks. A Chinese fan palm similar to what you are describing was priced at almost 50 bucks, and I bought a nicer one at Wal-Mart for 10. It pays to shop around! |

| Ohh okay thanks for your help! It is reassuring. I'm up northern, so it does seem like a good price when you talk about it now! I have a great place around me that is consistently cheaper! Maybe I'll pick up another :) |

| I find a lot of times it's just a matter of luck, finding the right plant in the right place at the right time I suppose. One of the main nurseries here has a great selection of palms and other tropicals, and it's fun to look around, but they are pretty expensive. Still, if you really want it you probably would find it there. Last year at a home renovation store I found a Chinese Fan palm pretty decent size for $15. The thing is, this year they didn't have them in their supply of houseplants. Same with the palm I got at W-mart. Usually they have the Majesty palms (who doesn't?) but among the selection I found a Phoenix roebelenii, about 3 feet high for $13. I noticed that whenever HD brings in colorful crotons in their houseplant section, they seem to be among the first plants sold. Glen |
