Tropical Garden Ideas for Corpus Christi

My friends backyard needs tropical interest. Her husband is interested in growing pepper plants and she would like to incorporate his hobby into her tropical, hacienda-like dream of a garden. What combinations of plants would work in this setting? This area gets full sun and faces east. She hates oleanders, so don't go there.

Bougainvillea, Chamaedorea palms native to Mexico, firecracker plant, Mediterranean palms from Spain, lots of succulents!

Also Yellow Bells/Esperanza (Tecoma stans) will flower like there' no tomorrow;

Jerusalem thorn (Parkinsonia aculeata);

Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides), any cultivar;

Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzioffianum)

Mexican Orange (Choisya ternata)

Kumquat (Fortunella spp.)

Texas Palmetto or Cabbage Palm, Saw Palmetto, Needle Palm

ALthough deciduous, I'd add a crapemyrtle for bonus bright floral color in the heat of summer

Lots of possibilities that I"m sure others could add on to this growing list.

What is your soil like? Do you know it's pH?
