taking over wintered plants back outside

When and how doe you take back outside plants that were overwintered in pots in a basement?

It looks like I've killed a few that otherwise did fine all winter in my basement. Nighttime temps of 40s is too low? (sweet potato vine, draecena, cannas...)

How do you avoid giving a light shock to banans? Do you cover them for a few days. With what? Even my densest shady areas seem to be too bright.
