European fan palm early death

I bought 2 earopean fan palms in April or early May, they have died already. We got a frost a couple days after I planted them (2) plants. I have only my Windmill palm. It is doing fine so far. I will need to protect it next winter with lights and a structure of insulated foam.

I meant Needle palm not windmill palm. The fan palms croaked after planting them, so I want to bump this post anyway.

Windmill palms are much hardier than European fan palms, maybe try those next time but they would still need winter protection in your zone. Here in zone 8a on the west coast my large palms are producing seedlings that survive the winterwith no protection.

Update: I just have Sabal minors now. At least they don't grow too tall, and I can protect them. But, in the future I may get a trunking palm. I may try a sabal minor 'Lousinana" that forms a low trunk over time, or a Windmill palm, there is a video on youtube of a few palms in my area, or I should say close to my area in SW Pa in Avella, Pa that shows how they cover the palms and use Christmas lights in winter with a thermocube. I think they use "heat tape" also.
