hardy palms at Home Depot!

I was at HD in Frederick, MD last week and they had a couple of hardy palm varieties at $19.99. I got a Chamaerops humilis and they had Sabal palmetto, too. The same size (about 2 gal) that I've seen for $40-50 elsewhere. Keep your eyes open!

Be sure to check the temp range on the cold hardy palms. It could be false economy. Cold hardy means different things in different zones.

I bought 2 of those cold hardy palms at HD,- a Pindo- which they say will take temps 15 - 0*, and a silver European Fan palm which they say can take 0 to -15*. I paid $12.98 each, in 2 gal. pots.. I'm in zone 7b- my Brugmansias, Gingers, & Alocasias return every year- let's hope these do too! Kasha77 |

Annebert, I don't think either Chamerops or Sabal palmetto can take your (our) zone without major protection. Sabal minor probably could. Are you sure the Sabal you got wasn't Sabal minor? I've never seen Sabal palmetto at HD.

I just doublechecked the label and mine is Chamaerops humilis var.cerifera. The label says 7a, most web sites say 7b, but on the palms forum someone said theirs withstood 14F (wrapped). I think the other probably was Sabal minor.
