best tropicals to plant in Sherman Oaks CA?

Hi, I love tropicals, have some gingers (love gingers!) and want to make my backyard really tropical. The only problem is that we live on a hillside with a great view (that's not the problem) but being on a hillside we get some lovely breezes, and some really hot ones too - when the santa anas come through I keep losing some of our potted tropicals (like our Lady Palm) - they're fine until the santa anas come but then they get dried out and we have to bring them into the house for intensive care.

Also I love bananas but the leaves get shredded almost immediately. I also have one heliconia that's holding its own but looks terrible from leaf shred. I would like to plant something that would make our yard tropical like a few of my friend's gardens that live around here, but their gardens are in courtyards or fenced yards that don't get the wind coming through like we do...

Any advice for a list of plants to try?
