Since basjoos start growing at much cooler temps than any other banana species (mine will be growing slowly when days are in the 50's F and nights are in the 30's F), you can uncover them much earlier than you would with another banana species. I would remove the mulch once the danger of a hard frost is past.

I live in North Stamford. inland from the water ... I have a giant clump with nine tall stalks ,,, been there three years and moved some around the garden this summer ... the first year i protected them and wrapped the trunks ,, then after that i just left them alone ,,, put some mulch on them ,, they did just fine
