I tried the solar lamps. And still have a few. I never found any with an off/on. Though they might exist. They basically come on at dark and remain on till the battery drains. 3-6 hours depending on the ligt and amount of sun shine they got. (Sometimes less.) Forget about them coming on in the morning before dawn.

I did like the soft glow. but as a group. The lights didn't last more than a season or so. There are individual exceptions. And the exceptions don't seem to have anything to do with price

I eventually went to a low voltage system. With this system you can get a remote option, and a timer is usually on the transformer. Max voltage in a line is about 12 volts so it isn't a big deal if you accidently cut into a wire. (Other than having to fix it.) Of course you do have to bury the wire in conduit under paths, lawns etc. (Anywhere you might trip over it or accidently cut it with a lawn mower etc.) But you can leave them exposed in beds. Buried under mulch.

They do put out a lot more light than the solar lights. But I like the more mutted lighting and change the bulbs to a lower wattage bulb. You also have the option of using a flood light to highlight a special plant, or sculpture, fountain etc. At Halloween I replace the bulbs with amber bulbs and red and green at Christmas. I would love to find purple bulbs for Purple, green and gold at Mardi Gras.
