August garden pics

Just some quick shots from around my yard this evening.

I don't find most (edible) figs to be particularly tropical looking, but the one known as 'Brunswick' or 'Magnolia' has especially deeply lobed leaves and I think it's one of the prettiest ones, foliage-wise. I'm always amazed at how fast figs can grow; I grew this one this spring from a little stub of a cutting I took last fall and stored in my fridge over the winter:

Nothing like a row of Canna 'Musifolia' to hide the view of my neighbor's back yard!

Seemannia (formerly Gloxinia) nematanthodes 'Evita'--this is one that I picked up at Plant Delights Nursery last summer. It's been blooming its head off all summer (that's Hosta plantaginea next to it):

A view of my garden, still looking surprisingly good; I'm especially impressed at how well Asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed) has done this year--very few aphids and deadheading after the first bloom produced a very strong second bloom:

Another view of the garden:

And of course I can't resist posting a few pics of my waggies:
