What ate EE Black Magic?

I just got an EE Colocasia Esculanta "Black Magic" from PDN last week. It was about 18" tall. It was in the ground for two days. I came home today and found something had eaten away the stalks at the base right at the ground. The pieces were all there, just laid out. Whatever it was chewed just enough to make it go "timber".

We have lots of squirrels and quite a few Muscovy ducks thatcome wandering through. Would cayenne pepper keep this from happening again? Will the poor plant survive? Has this happened to anyone?

I had a plant of 'Black Magic'* nibbled by rabbits several times this year before they finally lost interest. It came back and is about 2 1/2 feet tall at present.

*What does "EE" mean?

EE=Elephant Ears? So, could be a rabbit. I did notice one in the back yard this evening! I'm encouraged that your rabbits finally lost interest! There's hope. :)
