| I have a 2-yr-old Abyssinian banana planted in the ground which has 2-foot tall leaves but the plant itself hasn't grown an inch. It is only about 3 1/2 feet tall - what is wrong? |

| It could be a variety of reasons including soil type, amount of water, type of fertilizer, amount of fertilizer and amount of sunlight. Sometimes individual plants grow at different rates. My tallest one in the attached picture had a head start by having a good sunny window during the winter.

| do the abyssinian bananas fruit? I love the coloring but was never sure just how big they get (to know if i have room) or if they fruit? |

| Yes, it does produce fruit, (at least the green variety, since I have grown them from seed). However, since the Abyssinian banana is not a true banana (like the edible musa), the fruit is inedible. The red variety as shown in the above picture is grown as a tissue culture from existing plants, since the plants themselves do not produce seed true to the plant itself, from what I have read. The plants grow very fast and get to be monsters! I brought the largest plant in the above picture, inside for the winter, and it stands 10 and 1/2 feet high in my living room. It's circumference is 3 feet around at the base. Not good for small living rooms. Luckily my house is an A-frame, with a 30' vaulted ceiling. it might get that high if I let it! Kevin |
