Figs- Hardy Tropical Look

I love the look of the split leaf philendron but such things are not hardy in my area. One of my neighbors has this lush tropical looking foliage in front of her house. She caught me out there investigating. Turns out it's figs!! She says they grow like mad. They would look great as a background plant/filler plant in a tropical look. She's giving me some starts in the spring. Weird but I just thought I'd share!

Hi Tiki,

I love fig plants but have never grown one.

Does she winter protect them somehow? Apparently alot of people grow figs in pots and winter indoors. There are a quite a few types of figs, but one in particular I read about is named Hardy Chicago and is hardy in zone 6, maybe 5, when winter protected.

I wanted to buy a fig this spring but the only ones the local nursery had were 4 foot high plants and they wanted $60. I was thinking more along the line of buying a smaller cheaper one and trying to grow it as a summer patio plant but perhaps next year.

In the same ficus family of plants is also the rubber plant houseplant as well as the fiddle leaf fig, which has amazingly big leaves.

Altho I live in zone 8, our summers aren't very hot, & sometimes winters get frosty. I have 3 Brown Turkey figs that are doing extremely well. I cut them all down to the ground last spring as they were getting too large, & two are now very tall, and one is short and bushy. All have figs growing. I usually get 2 crops of figs each summer. I think they would be hard to kill & the leaves are very tropical-looking.
