Need help with unknown 'palm' and pictures

Well my mum has a plant that was sold to her as a 'palm' she has no idea what sort. Anyway, recently the leaves have become brown and crispy and have ded off, like a normal tree would in winter. The palm has some sort of bulb to it, half in the soil half out, just like when it was bought, I was thinking that maybe it would grow back at the start of spring again as there is this bulb type thing.
Here are some pictures to help identify it, and I would be most gratefull if you could tell me whether the leaves are suppose to die and then will grow back or if my mums just plain killed it!
(I hope this has been posted in the correct place ::..)
Thanks :)

| You have a coconut palm. Varienty unknown--perhaps a Dwarf Green Malayan. The nut is the seed. Looks like a goner to me. Coconuts are not seasonal so it will not recuperate from whatever it was that finally got to it. Sorry. |
