SW Michigan tropicals???

Anyone out there from SW Michigan growing tropical (esque). I have some bananas in the ground that I had tried to overwinter last year ... the got overwatered in March and that was the end of them. I put the pots outside and didn't get around to doing anything with them in spring. Well - all of a sudden up popped about 6 babies in each of the two pots so we put those in the ground and they have done ok but not great this year . Should I have separated out these little clumps? I will dig up one bunch and bring them in and will cover the other clump to see if I can overwinter those in the ground. I would love to find others in SW Michigan who are fiddling around with tropicals. You can email me at MagicKiwi1 @yahoo.com ... leave out the space there!
Cheers!
