Wow! I just moved here from Willamette Valley in Oregon, where winter is just brown and boring. I'm looking forward to installing some of these tropical looking plants in my new yard in Martinez. Can you give me your plant list. My favorite in your angel trumpet tree. I've always wanted to grow one.

Powergir1, although we are both in zone 9, our climates are very different. I live in the central valley. Our summers are long and HOT. We always exceed 100 degrees in the summer. The average summer high for martinez, according to the national weather association is in the 80s. So youguys definately have a marine influence. That means that you would be succesful in growing cool weather tropicals and subtropicals, and would struggle a bit with the ones that need heat (citrus for example). Plants that I think would thrive in your area are:

Tibouchina Urvillea
Australian tree fern
Brugmansia (angels trumpet)
Cymbidiums (you could probably grow them in ground. i cant because frost ocassionally threatens in Dec)

Check out this website. it's dedicated to growing cool weather palms and tropicals. Most of the people who post there are from the bay area and northern california.

Hi Powergirl,
I live in Concord just about 10 miles from Martinez. It gets plenty hot here in the summer. I have all sorts of citrus, brugmansia, some palms, castor bean, bananas, cannas, EEs bird of paradise and all sorts of subtropicals. I'm sure there are alot more that I can't think of right now. You are experiencing our winters, some frost but its unusual for it to last more than a day or two. Last year was an exception, it was really cold. Hope you like it here.
Linda
