Major fragrance options for tropicalismaniacs

| In addition to reliable standbys like Cestrum nocturnum and Brugmansias, what are some other good tropical-type plants for fragrance junkies, especially ones that will adapt to summer bedding?
I have a couple of plants that have been flowering under lights that might be candidates for the Great Outdoors, such as Brunfelsia "Isola" and a gardenia that's just begun opening extremely fragrant flowers, "White Gem":
This is a compact form, and so far has been adapting to indoor life under lights nicely (as opposed to the usual run of indoor gardenias, for which you might as well reserve space in the compost heap beforehand). Anyone with good luck using this or other gardenias as temperennial bedding? |

| Hey Eric, Where did you get that gardenia? What is your light setup? Every year I buy gardenias, grow them outside without problems, and then proceed to kill them over the winter. It would be nice to break the cycle! I just adore the scent! Elizabeth |

| Nicotiana Sylvestris fits into the tropicalesque 'theme' with bold foliage...and moonflower vine mixed with 4 O'Clocks. That's the smell of Georgia in August after the magnolias are no longer flowering. GGG |

| I found the gardenia at Logee's. I have killed a couple of indoor gardenias over the years, but so far this one is very healthy and currently full of buds. Might be worth moving my sambac jasmine out for summer bedding next year. |

| Wow! There are some impressive lists here! Well I have had great luck with the Brugmansias, and the Datura metel such as the "Ballerina" varieties. Jasmines are great along with the dwarf citrus which give a heavenly aroma. The evening scented stocks (matthiola) come in two fragrant varieties.....the columnar ones which smell very much like cloves and cinnamon, and the rather rambling ones with purple-mauve blooms which only open at night and give a coconut aroma. Some of the more old fashioned petunias....single bloom varieties and particularly the deep purple-bluish ones give off a nice musky scent at night too. four 0'clocks are pretty easy and the tall varieties of nicotiana will really please you with their evening fragrance. |

Great List! Thanks Clare. Patchou, never tried any gingers but I keep hearing how fragrant they are. Maybe I'll try out the Dr Moys. Meixue |
RE: Major fragrance options for tropicalismaniacs

| My own recommendations are: Brugmansia ('Charles Grimaldi' is very strongly fragrant) Clerodendrum trichotomum Datura Hosta plantaginea Lilium (various lilies are very fragrant and sufficiently exotic-looking to fit with a tropical-style garden) Polianthes tuberosa Sweet autumn clematis (sorry, can't remember the species offhand) Moonflowers (Ipomoea alba) and nicotianas (even the species) have been very disappointing to me, fragrance-wise. Many other "fragrant" flowers have a fragrance you can only smell if you stick your nose in the flower (Acidanthera and most of the "fragrant" hostas and daylilies come to mind). |

| All the detailed lists and other input are appreciated. I have 'Charles Grimaldi' on order. The Brugmansia that has really done terrifically here in a border planting is a form with huge pale pink trumpets (I think it may be 'Ecuador Pink'). It's been flowering for several weeks and there are numerous buds promising blooms till frost. Cestrum nocturnum is in its second flush and perfuming the entire back yard near the house. This is also the first year I've gotten the Hosta plantaginea brought from Texas to flower here, and it's in peak form right now. |
