Morinda citrifolia (Noni) from seed

I collected a bunch of noni seeds and would like to plant them but am getting conflicting germination instructions online. Some sites say to scarify the seed coat and plant in a sterilized moist potting mix using bottom heat. Other sites say to soak the seeds in water until they germnate.

Although I can't imagine why someone would want to grow Noni (the fruit smells like vomit to me) I've worked with similar seeds. If the seed is fresh frome the fruit and not dried you shouldn't need to scarify. If the seed has been dried then scarify. Plants with hard or slow to germinate seed is aided by Gibberellic acid in the soak or to water the substrate.

I was blown away by the smell. I wasn't expecting it to be so vile but I know several people that want the plant for medicinal reasons. I'm not one of them. lol

The seed was fresh but I cleaned it before bringing it home. I soaked some in water overnight and planted them and will see what happens. I have a bunch more seeds that I dried and have GA3 if needed.

How is your seedling doing? Did you get it to germinate yet?

No germination yet. They are supposed to germinate fast so maybe they aren't viable. I noticed fungus gnats in a different tray so maybe they're in that too. I'll dig up the seeds and see what's up.

BT works well for fungus gnats

I think my Bt might be getting old because I always use water with Bt dissolved in it on my seed trays and still got the gnats. Guess it's time for some new Bt. It was several years old and I'm not sure how long it lasts though it worked fine last season.

That sucks about the fungus gnats. They have been bad here this year already in the greenhouse, probably due to the unseasonably warm weather. I am like you, I like to try and grow and spout new and unusual things just to see if I can do it and see what the plant looks like. I don't care if its stinky or not LOL!

I guess the fungus gnats didn't destroy the seeds after all. I'm finally seeing some sprouting. They are taking much longer then I expected to germinate. Everything I read online made it seem that they'd come up in a very short time and these seeds were fresh. I collected them from the fruit (it really does smell gross) about a week before I planted them.

Back to the Bt. Does anyone know how long it remains viable in a dry form? I don't have the original container and have no idea if it had an expiration date printed on it.
