Green Elephant Ear Plant

I bought an elelphant ear plant and it started dying in my bedroom, I think it was to dry even with all the watering. So I put it in a vase with water and it is growing fine, mostly.... Today I noticed spots (lighter spots) on the leaves and am not sure what it is?

also is it better to put them outside in earth in summer?

These plants are 'really tropical' and need moist air. They don't require much watering, though. Cut off the offending leaves, as new ones will appear.
They much prefer it outside!!
