Spanish Bayonet - dies in the winter?!

I have a Spanish Bayonet that is very strange. I have some "regular" yuccas that do perfectly and stay lush all winter. I have ONE Spanish Bayonet near them and it does poorly. It was a seedling the frist spring I got it. It grew a little... almost a foot tall. By January, it had browned and died out. I thought it was dead. Spring came and it came back! Again, grew slowly... only about a foot tall, now here it is January, it has browned and died out again. Now I was told these are hardy down to zone 7a (which we are) and to 0°. It did not get below 8° last winter and this year, it has not gotten below 14°. Could there just be something wrong with this thing? Are they generally slower growers than other yuccas?

Any advice appreciated.
