There are many yucca that go by the name of "Spanich Bayonet" I grow many different yucca here in 7b without any problem, even at -2F. Without knowing which one you have, it's hard to say for sure. Is it a trunk growing type? Do you have a picture of it? where did you get your plant?

Is it a mature plant ? Most of the time cold hardiness
is based on mature plants.

Thanks for the reply guys... it was a "seedling". It was small when I acquired it. I think I purchased it from either Plant Delights, but I think I purchased it from someone on ebay that is actually still selling them. They are in Texas if I recall.

The little fence is around it, because the cats were bad about wanting to lay around it. Maybe the fence is causing issues?

I think that Yucca aloifolia is borderline even in zone 7a. I've seen it rated zone 6 and also zone 8! So it's probably somewhere in between. In colder zones they probably need excellent drainage, and some protection until they get larger. Like cover over with a bucket during cold spells. I'd like to grow one here in 7a, but I think I actually prefer the look of Yucca recurvifolia better -- and they are hardier.

Hard to tell from the pictures, now that they are damaged. At what temp did this happen? Some people call all yucca spanich bayonet. I live just a few miles from Plant Delights and that doesn't look like anyting he sells. My aloifolia has seen -2F with no damage at all, ice, snow, cold rain, no problem. From the pics it almost looks like Yucca elepantipes, which will never grow here not alone there. There is many trunk forming yucca you can grow there. Y.aloifolia, (Spanish Bayonet) has very stiff leaves and very sharp points at the end. It is also one of the faster growing. Y.recurvifolia has wide pliable leaves that droops also with point at the ends. If you feel the tip of the leaves on the one you have and it isn't sharp, I would guess you have Y. elephantipes, which is sold in the plant sections at the box stores, and also will grow in coastal Texas. Hello and thanks! Well, I seem to have caused some confusion and I have told you the wrong yucca. I have a yucca "Y.aloifolia", that is doing well... at least that is the one I think is doing well... that is what the tag said that came with it. Here is a photo of it....

SO, it must be the Spanish Dagger that is not doing so hot. Someone asked about the temperature. It seemed to do this before it ever started getting below freezing. If it could mature, I am sure it would help. It "maxes" out in late summer (never getting all that large, when you compare how fast other yuccas grow around here.

I have been growing Y. elephantipes in a pot and overwintering it in my heated palm shelter. So far they have survived -6.6*C/22*F without damage. This was a surprize as they were supposed to die off at 27*F. Keeping the plants quite dry is probably part of the reason for their toughness.
