Help-planting around pool cage

Posted by dogwood2010 central florida (My Page) on

Pool cage just finished, back side is about 35 feet long. Looking for ideas as to what plants to use; will have two queen palms, one at each corner, have also decided to put some orange bird of paradise plants in, looking for other tropical ideas, not too tall, partial sun, fairly hardy in 9b. Not a design expert here, and new to Florida. would like the area to be symetrical. Anyone have thoughts?

Some Dracaena marginatas are easy to find and very nice plants. Not very frost hardy, so they will need protection if frost is predicted. Otherwise they are really easy. Also Hawaiian ti plants will be a great addition giving color and definitely a tropical feel. Things like variegated gingers are nice and so are cannas, bananas, and a pygmy date palm is perfect because they never get very tall.

Try to bring lots of colors so its not all green and average. Camellias are nice evergreen shrubs, and tropical hibiscus are really perfect for a tropical feel, but hibiscus will not survive a frost without protection. Also look around at what others are growing to give you an idea at what you can grow.

Good luck!

Mango Kush - Wow! You really do have some very cool and strikingly beautiful banana specimens, Colocasia and Alocasia! Are those pink-salmon-colored-bananas edible? If they are, then what do they taste like?

I can't see the alba variegata, can you repost? The coffee cup is awesome!

alocasia variegata has unique camouflage variegation

colocasia lime zinger

velutina are edible but not very eatable. they have large seeds in them but have a distinct vanilla flavor. people usually dont eat them however because they peel themselves when ripe, so they let them spoil for ornamental reasons.

colocsaia coffee cups

colocsaia coffee cups are the only colocasia that has a cup shape, they are larger than other elepahnt ears.

their cups fill with gallons of water before tipping over from their own weight pouring rain water to other colocasias below

fun to play with when watering with the hose :)
