Bougainvillea 'Tom Thumb' and 'Vera Purple'

| Does anyone know how large they grow ultimately? I have "Tom Thumb"(which has never bloomed since I got it). I bring it in every fall and prune it, so I wonder how big it gets eventually. The same with Vera Purple. I have a friend who just recently moved to Miami and he told me that he has a small plot of yard to plant some plants in and I would like to send some of my tropicals to him(they would me much more happy in Miami than in Chicago)and since he loves bougainvilleas, I thought it would be nice to plant mine in the yard, but when I told him about it, he infered that there would be no room for a bougainvillea. I said it was a shrub, not a vine, but I realized just because it was a bush and not a vine, that does not necessarily mean it was compact, and I didn't really know whether or not it got big. |

| I've had my bougie for about 9 yrs now here in Milwaukee. I bring it in in the fall and leave it close to a sunny window in the basemt. The temp is about 45 to 50 degrees; it goes dormant for a few months. About in May I take it outside and it starts all over again to bloom purple flowers. As long as you give it a drink of warm water once in a while it can survive. You also can trim it severely while its dormant. However, it needs about six to eight hrs. of sunshine to bloom again. Good luck. Lightly fertilize too. |
