Has anyone grown this plant in a pot in the north east part of U.S.A. If so what kind of conditions did you grow under. Thanks

RE: Traveler palm

I grow the Traveler's palm (not really a palm but in the banana family). They are also closely related to Strelitzia (Birds of Paradise). If you are familiar with the Giant Bird of Paradise (S. nicolae), Traveler's is a close relative. Of the two, the Giant Bird is an easier plant to grow. You can grow the Travelers in the North in a container if you provide the following:

i.) Very good light--requires more sun than the S.nicolae.

ii.) Warm temps--S.nicolae can tolerant chillier temps; Traveler's have low tolerance for frost (I keep my plants outside for as much of the year as possible so this is factor.)

iii.) Watch the watering--keep moderately moist and let dry some between waterings.

You can definitely grow them as a houseplant but they are more temperamental than the Giant Bird (which is equally if not more beautiful). Overall, I'd say S. nicolae is more robust grower. But add one to your collection if you have the chance! Good luck!
