Split Leaf Philodendron or Elephant Ear Palm

Can the roots of either the split leafd philodendron or the elephant ear palm be strong enough to invade one's home and plumbing and ruin a bathroom? I have a neighbor who is claiming this. He calls it and elephant ear palm, I think it's a split leaf philodendron.

Please help me with this information.

They are both very differant species. The split leaf philodendron can and does grow very large here in Costa Rica, and their ariel roots really does 'grab' onto a tree trunk. If it was placed near plumbing, I guess it would 'grab' the pipes, but I don't think it would 'sqeeze/break' them.
