Is this an hibiscus flower on a trailing vine?

Again, this is from Nayarit, Mexico (in Chacala, 100 km or so north of Puerto Vallarta).

This plant is a HUGE trailing vine that seems to thrive in disturbed spaces. I don't think it is cultivated... it looks like a weed here.

The flowers remind me of hibiscus, but the stems are not woody and they're a bit fuzzy. The trilobed leaves also have hairs all over them. Can anyone suggest an identity for this plant?

Thanks again!
Joe D.

I'm not entirely certain, but it looks like Abutilon, (flowering maple) Toni

Hi
Flower certainly looks like some type of Hibiscus. Not familiar with any vining type though.
I wish I was there with you!! Mexico is such a botanical
treasure trove.

Almost certainly a Hibiscus sp., judging from the conspicuous ring of epicalyx bracts around each flower. Another diverse genus, with many little-known species in C and S America. My guess is it belongs to the large Section Furcaria (see www.malvaceae.info website). The flower is very like H. radiatus, the stems and foliage like H. diversifolius, but there are doubtless other spp. in this alliance.

Tony -- Thanks so much for that web reference... very useful. I'm still not sure of the ID, but I'll keep digging. Maybe it is an Abelmoschus?

thanks, Joe
