Stromanthe sanguinea is the correct name. I've grown it for 5 or so years in the ground. I've bloomed it once, maybe twice. It is remarkably cold hardy having been killed to the ground with a low of 20 this winter, but already putting out new growth. In years of mild winters here along the Gulf Coast, it never even browns.

I find here, that this plant will take the sun but doesn't 'like' water dropping from an overhanging source, such as a roof or a taller plant.

Still learning. I remember another called "Bamburanta" C. lubbersiana that also is usually misidentified. That one is also hardy in the Bay Area.
