Questions on Dragon Fruit's peculiar growth

I just bought a dragon fruit cutting and am ready to plant it. I've been reading about how most people grow it. They say it needs to grow up a 5 foot support and droop back downwards from the top (see attached photo). This is quite different from growing other fruit trees, so I have questions on this peculiar way of growing.

1) Why does it need to grow in a /\ shape (upside down "U")?

2) Can it grow in an "r" shape? I have a gazebo. I'm thinking of letting it grow up a pillar and follow its way to the apex. This would only achieve an "r" shape. Is the "r" shape inferior to the typical /\ shape?

3) I hear that it has aerial roots (roots above ground). How much of its nutrients does it absorb from these aerial roots in proportion to its traditional ground roots? How do I feed these aerial roots?

4) Do dragon fruit only flower when they reach a certain length? Or can you induce flowering on a short, but old, stem?
