tibouchina and softened water?

I feel a little stupid not knowing the answer to this question, but here goes. Whenever I have tried to grow tibouchina in the past they have always died. It may be the heat that is killing them, but I suspect that it is our extremely hard water. I have read that you can not use any fertilizer that contains calcium on them and our water is extremely high in calcium. Is it possible to use the indoor house water that has passed through a water softener? I have never even considered this water for plants since I know that it is not drinkable. I am now giving tibouchina one last go. We don't have enough rain water for me to water it with that. So would it be OK to water with the house water?
