Do you know which variety you have?? The big leafed types need more shade,there are also hybrids between the two . Mine is grown in an aviary so constantly gets assaulted by the birds, so usually looks ratty lol They do respond to acid soil much like gardenia. While they seem to tolerate alkaline conditions they do much better in neutral or acid. Water that would raise the pH could be your problem also hopw much salt is in it??
Your climate should be good as I know they hate cold weather . You might google on the web to find which variety you have and some better options for your area??
