I forgot to mention that the seeds were bauhinia variegata. I also planted a white variety and have the same problem.

Some 35 years ago when I lived in Florida as a child, we bought a little "Hong Kong Orchid" tree as they called it then, at a sale for a dollar. The tree was at my old house for years until some new owners cut it down. I have visited Florida the last two years and hoped to get some seeds of this plant, but it was the wrong time of year. Does anyone have any purple orchid tree seeds they would be willing to send me for postage?

Linda, orchid trees grow best in full sun or high, shifting pine shade, they thrives in any well-drained soil but in alkaline soils will show interveinal chlorosis (yellowing) on the leaves. Bauhinia variegata , most popular, produces in winter and spring most nearly orchid-like blossoms of purplish casts or pure white in cultivar `Candida'. Couldnt find anything on how long it would be before it blooms.

I bought this tree since it was a seedling a year ago, I planted it so close to the wall. Today I move it, now the leaves are drooping. is it going to die? I really want to cry!!!!

Bauhinias will usually bloom at 3 years if mature.
If the tree keeps dying back, it will not be able to mature, or will take forever to do so.
Best for you to dig up asnd grow as a house plant or protect in your garage during real cold spells.
The trees do, as ladygreensleeves mentioned, bloom in the winter mostly, though some varieties bloom all year, depending on the growing season. Most initiated by cooler periods. If your plant is dying back, then it is killing off where the potential flower buds would come from

I got a single flower on one of my trees this year. It was lovely. I hope for more next time. Mine are greenhoused. The temps will start decreasing around November, I let it get to about 55F at night in winter. Hopefully that will spur some blooms! I have several different varieties. If they all bloomed at once it would be a huge show.
