They both do well here in northern California in shade, although neither bloom as well if they don't get sun. I'd say that the Giant Bird of Paradise is probably the better one for a shady spot, but I have both in shade and they grow well here. I wouldn't think they are completely winter hardy in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and would need major protection in freeze events there.
