Try searching Costus malortieanus (drop the first R from the name you were given) or its common name "Stepladder Ginger" and it is both nice in the soft downy spiral leaf and also has quite a nice flower. Low growing . Good luck with the division

Thanks Alison. Looks like the label was a typo. I'm surprised google didn't pick that up and suggest the alternative spelling as it usually does. But that is the correct ID, thanks.

I chickened out on the 6 divisions after I cut the pot away from it. The rhizomes were so intertwined I only made 3 cuts. Apparently it's a fast grower and spreader so maybe I'll have more than 6 divisions worth before long once the weather warms up.

Would be careful how you plant these I find them incredibly invasive. Not only expand but come up from seed.
There is a variagated form that to me is more attractive shows off the spiral growth habit .Flowers are rather attractive but short lived. Good luck with it!!! gary

Gary, they're forming part of my 'rainforest' garden understorey. So a bit of invasiveness isn't too bad. But I'll keep an eye on them and see how they go. I've a few other Costus species as well and I do like the look of them.
