Potting Pigmy Palm and Bird of Paradise

I'm planting these in planters in full sun as poolside plants in FL. Also subject to very heavy rains over summer and drought in winter.

Here's what my plan is - let me know if I could improve.

The decorative planters are lightweight plastic. 18-20"
** We do NOT want to grow these to large size - they are just decorative. If they get too big in the next 2-3 years (over 7 feet) they can no longer be left in planters and will have to go in the ground as they would never be able to be removed from the screened in patio.

1. Drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage
2. Layer of styrofoam at the bottom for drainage
3. 2 different potting soils mixed together in the planters-
a) Home Depot generic potting soil (dense, heavy)
CANCEL THIS ABOVE HOME DEPOT POTTING SOIL- HORRIBLE STUFF IT WAS FILLED WITH ZILLIONS OF BUGS - RETURNED IT ALL
b) Vigoro Organic potting soil -(airy, lightweight)
4. Light fertilize (Miracle Grow or similar)

Again, I need to emphasize the goal is to keep them alive, but not make them huge.

Thanks in advance!
