What's wrong with my princess flower tree?

Hi folks,

I live in San Francisco and have two princess flower trees in front of my house in containers. They get full sun (maybe too much?) and are beginning to flower alot but the leaves are dry around the edges and falling off. The leaves begin as crimson brown and never turn green. The trees have excellent drainage but is it possible that I am watering too much or too little? Right now, I give a thorough soaking every 2-3 days because I was advised to water them whenever my water meter reads dry. Please help! I love these trees so much and can't figure out what to do. Thanks!

You might google "Tibochina" there are several different types . I live in s florida so not much help with culture for you. One piece of advice DON'T plant in a parrot cage they reduced it to a pile of twigs lol. gary

Mine is in morning sun and after noon shade - it does the same thing - no idea why!

A neighbor who has a gorgeous specimen swears they need acidic soil. Would be worth a shot?? There's is growing in full western sun gary

I have acidic soil (and tropical climate) and they grow like weeds here. Actually, they are considered noxious weeds here--stupid glory bushes, they keep popping up everywhere!

But I can tell you they tolerate LOTS of water (we get 170"+ rain per year), nutrient-poor, thin, acidic soil, full sun or part shade, and complete neglect. Maybe yours are too dry?

We had a huge one in San Diego. It was up to 8-10'. South facing with light afternoon protection. It was leggy as no one cared for it ..i it hardly if ever got watered. Except when I came down...twice a year. It eventually died(from neglect) but we had it for over 25 years. I planted it..it is one of my favorite plants..I'm going to try it in Oregon zone 7 and keep it outside and see what happens. We didn't have acid soil..just plain poor sandy soil with some red clay.
